How long does fence stain last in Oklahoma?
An oil-based penetrating stain protects cedar for three to five years in Oklahoma weather. Because it cures into the wood fibre rather than forming a surface film, it fades evenly instead of peeling, and it renews with a clean-and-recoat rather than a strip-and-sand. Film-forming products often begin peeling within two to three years here.
Do you clean the fence before staining it?
Yes, always. Every fence gets soft-wash chemical cleaning first, which lifts gray oxidised fibre, mildew and mill glaze so the stain can reach live wood. We do not pressure wash cedar — high pressure raises the grain and drives water into the boards, and both of those shorten the life of the finish.
Can a gray, weathered fence be stained?
Usually, yes. Gray is oxidation on the surface, not rot, and soft-wash cleaning takes most fences back to a stainable cedar tone. The test is structural: if posts are failing or boards are soft and crumbling, staining is money spent on a fence that is already leaving, and we will say so before you spend it.
How soon can a new cedar fence be stained?
Most new cedar is kiln-dried, so there is no mandatory waiting period. We check every fence with a moisture meter: below 18% we stain, and above it we watch the weather and stain when the wood is ready. Staining early protects the boards during their first Oklahoma summer, when UV does the most damage.
Do you stain both sides of the fence?
Whenever both faces are on your property, or your neighbor agrees to access, we stain both. Moisture attacks a board from either side, so a fence protected on one face only will cup and check on the unprotected side. Both faces are counted in the square footage on your written quote.
What if my fence has already been painted?
A painted fence cannot be returned to a natural penetrating-oil finish. Paint does not come off cedar completely enough for oil to reach the fibre. The realistic route is recoating with a solid, film-forming stain — we most often use Sherwin-Williams SuperDeck or WoodScapes — and that finish is maintained on a cycle rather than restained.
