Why we soft-wash fences — and never pressure wash
Pressure washing is the fastest way to make a gray fence look clean — and one of the fastest ways to ruin it. We clean every fence with soft-wash chemistry instead of force. Here’s the difference, and why it decides how long your stain lasts.

What pressure washing does to cedar
Cedar is a soft wood. The pressure it takes to blast off gray oxidation — typically well over a thousand PSI at the surface — also cuts into the wood itself. The damage has a name: furring. The wand tears the softer springwood out from between the harder grain lines, leaving a fuzzy, splintered surface, visible wand stripes, and etched channels that follow every pass.
Worse, the damage telegraphs through stain. Pigment settles unevenly in the torn fiber, wand marks read as tiger stripes under low sun, and the fuzzed surface wears faster. A fence can be pressure-washed into needing board replacement it didn’t need before the “cleaning.”
How soft-wash cleaning works
Soft-wash chemical cleaning flips the equation: chemistry does the work, water just rinses. Professional cleaning solutions go on at low pressure and dissolve the gray oxidized layer, mildew and grime at the cellular level. After dwell time, a gentle rinse carries it all off — the original wood color comes back without a single fiber torn. It’s the same reason your dentist doesn’t clean teeth with a sandblaster.

Why cleaning decides how long stain lasts
Penetrating oil stain works by soaking into open wood fiber. Gray oxidation is a layer of dead cells sitting on top of that fiber — stain applied over it bonds to the dead layer, not the wood. It looks fine for a season, then sheds early. This is the most common reason a “budget” stain job fails: not the stain, the prep. Clean wood plus penetrating oil is also what makes the 2–3 year maintenance cycle so cheap — soft-wash, dry, recoat, done.

We pre-wet and rinse landscaping along the fence line, cover what needs covering, and alert the neighbors before we start. Once the stain is dry it’s ultra-low VOC, kid- and pet-friendly, with no harsh chemical smell.
Dry, inspect, then stain
After the wash, the fence dries fully — a few days depending on weather — then we walk every panel before stain goes on. Is it OK to pressure wash a wood fence?
We advise against it. Cedar is a soft wood — pressure high enough to strip gray oxidation also cuts into the surface, leaving wand marks, splintered fuzz and etched grain that show through stain.

Every weathered fence, yes. Stain applied over gray oxidation or mildew bonds to the dead layer, not the wood — it looks fine briefly, then fails early. Only clean, recently installed wood can skip it.
Can soft washing remove old peeling stain?
It removes oxidation, mildew and loose material, but a failing film-forming coating is a remediation job — we assess it honestly first, because not every fence can take penetrating stain over an old film.
