Why Oil-Based Stain Works: A Tree's Natural Defense, Restored
Every fence board was once a living tree that protected itself with natural oils and resins. Cutting and drying the lumber strips much of that defense out — an oil-based penetrating stain is how we put it back.

A living tree already knew how to protect itself
Trees naturally produce oils and resins that repel moisture and pests while the tree is alive. Cedar in particular is prized for natural rot resistance for exactly this reason.
Milling and drying remove that protection
Once a tree becomes lumber, it’s cut, kiln-dried, and stripped of much of that natural oil content. The wood keeps cedar’s grain and structure, but loses a meaningful share of its built-in defense in the process.
An oil-based penetrating stain restores the mechanism, not just the look
Rather than sitting on the surface the way paint does, an oil-based stain soaks into the same fiber structure the tree’s natural oils once occupied — replacing what was lost instead of just covering it up.
Why that matters more than color
This is the real reason penetrating oil outperforms film-forming stains long-term: it works the way the wood is built to be protected, instead of fighting that structure with a surface coating that eventually cracks.
