What 'paraffinic oil' actually means
Paraffinic oils are highly refined mineral oils with a stable, non-reactive molecular structure — unlike natural oils such as linseed or soybean oil, which can oxidize inside the wood over time.
Why that stability matters in a fence stain
An oil that oxidizes inside the wood breaks down faster, shortening the protection window and sometimes feeding mildew growth as the organic oil degrades. A paraffinic-based oil holds its structure longer, so protection lasts closer to the full 3-to-5-year window instead of fading early.
