The cost to stain a fence typically ranges from $4 to $12 per linear foot. The price depends on several factors, including the age and size of your fence, the number of obstacles to protect (like plants, concrete, or pools), and whether you need one or both sides stained. Professional fence staining companies use careful processes to prevent overspray and protect your property, which can impact the final cost. While hiring a true professional may seem more expensive upfront, it protects your investment and can save you thousands in future repairs by preventing wood decay, warping, and cracking. For the most accurate price, it’s best to request a free estimate tailored to your fence and property.

Yes, staining your fence is highly recommended. Staining not only boosts your property’s curb appeal, but also protects your fence from harsh weather, UV rays, mold, and mildew. Using a high-quality, oil-based stain helps keep moisture out, which prevents warping, splitting, and cracking caused by Oklahoma’s freeze-thaw cycles. Regularly staining your wood fence is a smart investment that can extend its lifespan and save you money on repairs or early replacement. For best results, choose a professional service with experience in protecting fences from the local environment.

The longevity of your fence stain depends on the type of product used and your local climate. At Patriot Stain and Seal, we use premium oil-based paraffinic stains, known for their deep penetration and long-lasting protection. Typically, our transparent stains last between 2 to 3 years, while semi-transparent options can protect your fence for 4 to 5 years in challenging climates like Oklahoma. Unlike solid or film-forming stains—which can peel, crack, or trap moisture—oil-based paraffinic stains enhance the wood’s natural beauty and provide superior resistance to UV rays, mold, and moisture. All our Wood Defender® stains carry a manufacturer’s warranty of 2 to 3 years, but real-world results often exceed that, especially with proper maintenance. For maximum lifespan and ongoing protection, consider a regular maintenance program tailored to your fence or outdoor structure.

The main difference between transparent and semi-transparent fence stains is the level of pigmentation and how much of the wood’s natural grain they reveal.

Semi-transparent stains contain more pigment, offering a rich, stained appearance while still allowing some wood grain to show through. This extra pigmentation provides stronger UV protection, helping to prevent fading and sun damage. Semi-transparent stains are ideal for new or freshly cleaned fences and are especially popular because they typically last longer—about 4 to 5 years in Oklahoma’s climate. Our most requested semi-transparent colors are Sierra, Sable Brown, and Rustic Oak.

Transparent stains use ultra-fine trans-oxide pigments to highlight and enhance all the natural wood grain and beauty, making them a great choice for new cedar or redwood fences. These stains provide excellent protection while letting the wood’s unique character shine through. Transparent stains generally last 2 to 3 years and are most popular in shades like Cedar Tone and Oxford Brown.

Both types of stains protect against moisture and UV rays, but semi-transparent stains offer a bit more durability due to higher pigment levels. Choosing the right stain depends on your desired look and how much natural wood you want to show.

Staining your brand new fence is the best way to protect and preserve it for years to come. When a tree is alive, it naturally produces its own oils, which help keep the wood flexible, resilient, and protected from the elements. Once the tree is cut and the wood is used to build a fence, this natural oil production stops, leaving the wood vulnerable to drying, cracking, and decay.

By applying a high-quality, oil-based stain shortly after installation, you’re essentially putting those protective oils back into the wood. This helps keep the wood supple, prevents moisture from penetrating, and shields against harmful UV rays, mold, and mildew. Staining early also locks in the fence’s fresh, beautiful appearance and prevents the graying and deterioration that untreated wood experiences—often within just 12 to 16 months.

In short, staining your new fence not only maintains its curb appeal but also extends its lifespan significantly, saving you money on repairs and early replacement. A properly stained fence can last for decades with routine maintenance, while an untreated fence may only last 5 to 7 years before replacement is needed.

We can make your fence look uniform, even if it has both old and new boards from past repairs. After thoroughly cleaning the aged wood, we restore its natural color so it blends much better with the new boards. For the most consistent appearance, we recommend using a semi-transparent stain, which helps unify the look without hiding the wood’s natural character.

When it’s time for maintenance in the future, reapplying stain is quick and easy. Our oil-based stains penetrate deep into the wood and don’t form a surface film, so there’s no need to strip the old stain before a new coat. As long as your fence is in good condition, a recoat can often be applied with minimal prep work. This makes it simple to keep your fence looking great year after year with a maintenance plan from Patriot Stain and Seal.

No, there’s no need to come back and seal your fence after it’s been stained with our products. Our Expert Stain and Seal oil-based stains are specially formulated to provide both color and waterproofing protection in a single application. The oil penetrates deep into the wood fibers, blocking moisture from getting in and keeping your fence protected from the inside out. This oil penetration acts as the sealant, preventing water damage, warping, and decay.

Unlike surface sealants, which can form a film that eventually peels or cracks as the wood expands and contracts, our oil-based stains will never peel or crack. This means your fence stays protected and looking great for years, without the hassle or extra cost of a separate sealing step. With our process, staining and sealing are truly all-in-one.

No, the gray color won’t show through once your fence has been properly cleaned and restored. Before staining, we thoroughly clean and restore your wood to its natural color, removing built-up mildew, mold, and weathering. Unlike harsh pressure washing—which can damage wood and leave streaks—we use a gentle chemical cleaning process that safely lifts away grayness without harming the surface. This careful prep ensures the wood is ready to absorb stain evenly, giving you a rich, consistent finish that looks just like new. Proper cleaning is essential for the stain to bond well and achieve the best, longest-lasting results.

How long you should wait to stain a wood fence depends on many variables.  The moisture content of the wood must be below 18 percent for oil penetrating stains to sufficiently penetrate the wood.  Most western red cedar fence is kiln dried so it can be stained almost immediately.  If you have pressure treated lumber, most of the time you’ll need to wait upwards of a year or more before an oil stain can penetrate the wood.  If you are using a film forming surface stain like sherwin williams super deck, the wood can have upwards of 50 percent moisture. Check with the manufacturers label or your local fence staining professional for best results.

As a general rule, you should stain your fence within 3 to 4 weeks of installing it.   It will come down to the type of stain, and the moisture content of the wood, but in most cases 3 to 4 weeks is the maximum time you should wait to stain a wood fence.

You can go up to about 6 months without staining a fence before it will start to turn gray and oxidize.  This will require chemical wood cleaning process to remove which will add about 20 to percent to the cost of the project. In the winter, freezing temperatures and high moisture can cause irreparable damage to the wood within days or weeks, so it is best to get it protected as soon as possible.
